Felis Lucidum

from $20.00

Etched entirely with numbers and equations by hand. This piece focuses on the physics and chemistry responsible for the Tapetum Lucidum, which increases night vision and creates that characteristic eyeshine seen in animals like wolves, cats and dogs. Scroll below for the full description.

The last two photos you see in this collection is are photos I took with my microscope of the tapteum of a cow eyebal and a sheep eyeballl. A print of one of these is included with the glowing limited editions.

The original “Felis Lucidum” was etched entirely with numbers and equations by hand. This piece focuses on physics and chemistry explaining how animals like cats see in the dark and why they have eye-shine.

At the back of a cat's eye, behind the retina, is a reflective material called the Tapetum Lucidum. When light enters the eye, it scatters through the tapetum lucidum and bounces around the eye, increasing light absorption in rod cells to give them improved night vision. When the light bounces back out the pupil, it creates their characteristic eye-shine.

It is drawn with a chemical formula for retinal which is important in scotopic or low light vision. There are Rayleigh scattering equations to explain how the photos bounce and scatter through the tapetum lucidum, as well as the speed of light. To account for the human to cat bonding, there is also a little Oxytocin in his eyes.
