Science-inspired art by Sienna Morris, drawn entirely with numbers and equations by hand. Based in Portland, Oregon, Sienna is self taught in science and art, and uses her Numberism technique to process what she's learned, illustrating the data where it lives.

She offers original work as well as fine art canvas and paper prints, and clothing of her work.

Selected Works

Revealing the beauty of the natural world through intricate scientific numberism illustrations.

Photos of Sienna hand engraving the “Lonely Whale” on copper plate. This was composed by writing the pitch and rhythm of his song repeatedly. Original sold.

Every mark is a number or an equation, written by hand using pen or fine blades on archival board or metal plate. The numbers and equations create a scientific portrait of the subject by describing their underlying form and function. Each drawing can take 100s of hours to draw and months of research to create.

This page features examples of her work in a variety of mediums, including mixed media on metal plate, mixed media clayboard, scratchboard and pen on paper with gouache.

Fine art reproductions of most of her work is available on this website, at her art studio and at art fairs. Original work is made available to collectors through Patreon before they are released to the public.

Mixed media on Metal Plate

Sienna uses fine metal blades and scribes to scratch numbers and equations into metal plates through a top layer of oil paint or gouache. Click on the arrows to see more examples in the collection.

MIXED MEDIA CLAYBOARD

The numbers and equations are created by writing with micron pens and scratching with engraving tools by hand. The clayboard is first painted with gouache or watercolor and later often embellished with chalk pastel.

Micron pen & gouache on paper

These compositions are created by writing equations and numbers with micron pen, color pencil or pencil on paper. Sienna incorporates watercolor and gouache into the background.

Custom Scratchboard

Sienna modifies clayboard to create colorful scratchboards, using ink or oil paint on claybord. “Fathoms” and “Aflutter” are unique in that the base coat is backlight reactive fluorescent paint, making each number glow under black light.

Anatomy and Physiology

Scratchboard Etchings

Scratchboard numberism illustrations of the body in motion, drawn with scientific data describing physiological function. Newer work is informed by 60 hours of dissection under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Hancock at Portland State University.

Scratchboard is an archival drawing substrate consisting of a layer of white clay coated with black ink. Sienna scratches numbers and equations through the ink using fine blades, thus revealing the white clay beneath which is later stained with with ink or watercolor.

Booth photos

The collection of photos below features booth designs that Sienna uses at fine art fairs, street art fairs and nerdy conventions. The booth can be modified for an event’s specifications. Sienna prefers a 10x10 corner booth, but can modify it for an event with or without a structural tent. Click the arrows to view all the booth designs.
