Anatomy and Physiology : Scratchboard Etchings

This selection is from Sienna’s expanding series on Anatomy and Physiology, illustrating the body in motion with underlying anatomy and physiology revealed. In 2025 she will release new anatomical work in this series focusing on both human and non human animals. This work is informed by her work as a dissector in a human anatomy lab at PSU.

Sienna scratches through the black ink surface of scratchboard with an x-acto or ceramic blade to reveal the white clay beneath, which she later stains with ink or watercolor.

Each piece is illustrated with scientific data describing the biological function of the revealed structures.

Mixed media Claybord

These mixed media claybord illustrations are first painted with gouache before using micron pen and etching tools to form the subject with additive and subtractive numberism. Soft pan pastel is used on the final work to create depth and atmosphere.

Copper etching

Oil paint on 1/8” copper plate, hand etched with numbers and equations, using x-acto blades and engravers. Some of these etchings are “living copper” in that there are select exposed numbers which will oxidize and change color over time based on the environments they are displayed or stored in. Potential colors are green, aqua, red or black. It is not recommended to touch the finished etching.

Custom Scratchboard

Custom scratchboards created by Sienna, using ink or oil paint on claybord. “Fathoms” and “Aflutter” are unique in that the base coat is backlight reactive fluorescent paint, making each number glow under black light.
